Students of the 2023 batch studying under the National Education Policy (NEP) at the School of Open Learning (SOL), University of Delhi, have one major question after completing their 6th semester examinations:
Should I continue to the 4th year or exit after completing three years?
With 6th semester exams now over, many students are waiting for the Entry and Exit Consent Form that will determine whether they continue towards a 4-year Honours/Research degree or graduate with a regular 3-year degree.

Who Does This Update Apply To?
This update is only for:
- DU SOL students admitted in 2023
- Students studying under the NEP framework
- Students who have completed or are completing the 6th semester
Students from older batches are not affected by this process.
What Is the Entry & Exit Option?
Under the NEP system, students have two choices after completing the 6th semester:
Option 1: Exit After 3 Years
Students who choose to exit after the third year will:
- Complete their graduation after 6 semesters
- Receive their regular bachelor’s degree
- Become eligible for provisional certificates
- Receive final division in their result
Option 2: Continue to the 4th Year
Students who continue will:
- Take admission into the 7th semester
- Continue towards a 4-year degree
- Receive their final degree after completing the fourth year
- Become eligible for Honours or Research-based degree pathways
When Will the Entry & Exit Form Be Released?
Based on previous timelines, the Entry & Exit Consent Form is expected to be released:
Between the last week of July 2026 and the first week of August 2026.
The form is usually released close to the result period so students can make an informed decision regarding their academic future.
Why Is This Form Important?
Many students treat the consent form casually and later regret their choice.
Once students choose to continue into the 4th year, their graduation process changes.
Students should carefully decide before submitting the form because their academic records and degree status will depend on this decision.
What Happens If You Choose Exit?
If you select the Exit option:
- Your graduation will be completed after 3 years.
- Your degree process can move forward.
- Your result will show the final division after successful completion.
- No admission to the 7th semester will be required.
This option is suitable for students who do not wish to continue into the fourth year.
What Happens If You Choose Entry?
If you select the Entry option:
- You will continue into the 4th year.
- Admission to the 7th semester will be required.
- Additional fees will be payable during admission.
- Your final degree will be awarded only after completing the fourth year.
Students planning higher education or research-focused pathways may consider this option.
Will There Be Any Fee?
Exit Option
No additional admission fee for the 7th semester is required.
Entry Option
Students continuing to the 4th year will have to complete the admission process and pay the applicable semester fee.
What If You Have a Back Paper?
Students who choose Exit but later receive an ER or back paper in the 6th semester will only need to clear the relevant paper according to university rules.
The presence of a back paper does not automatically force students into the 4th year.
Important Advice Before Filling the Form
Before submitting the Entry/Exit Consent Form, ask yourself:
- Do I want a 3-year degree or a 4-year degree?
- Am I planning postgraduate studies?
- Am I interested in research pathways?
- Am I willing to spend an additional year and pay additional fees?
The decision should be based on your career goals rather than pressure from friends or classmates.
Final Update
DU SOL students from the 2023 batch should keep checking official updates during late July and early August 2026.
The Entry & Exit Consent Form is expected during that period, and students should carefully review their options before making a final decision.
Choosing between a 3-year graduation and a 4-year degree is an important academic decision that can affect future studies and career plans.
